The Unknown Van Meter Visitor

Image
Sketch of the Van Meter Visitor The Van Meter Visitor This tale is from many years ago about an interesting bat-like cryptid monster and has become one passed on for many generations. The Van Meter Visitor/Monster was observed in the Fall of 1903 in Van Meter, Iowa. The most popular description of it would be that it is a large bat humanoid creature with a horned head and that it reeked of a very foul stench for great distances around it. The creature was said to jump from building to building while flying at alarmingly fast speeds and some reports claim that it had the ability to shoot a bright light from its head. Over the course of a few nights, this monster was spotted in the town and reigned terror and fear among the resident. Although it was scary, some believed that it held no ill intent and thus it got the name Visitor instead of monster Now, this is the record of events that took place on those series of nights in 1903. On the first night, the creature was spo...

The Ghostly Handprint of Francis Leavy

Image
Stock Image, not actually Francis Leavy's Hand Francis Leavy & The Tragic Fire Ghostly handprints are something that is quite regularly referred to when talking about paranormal mysteries and ghosts overall. This specific mystery is of that sort but adds on an interesting and confusing twist to that. It is about a firefighter who was able to predict his own death as well as leave a handprint that was never removed for many years after his death. The mystery starts off on April 18th, 1924 when Francis Leavy, a firefighter ranked 'pipeman' from Chicago, Illinois was in his department going through quite a normal day. As the day progressed his colleagues started to notice that he was behaving strangely and seemed to be depressed but it wasn't very alarming at the time. That changed when Francis went to clean a window and while doing so stopped while leaning his hand against it. He suddenly turned to his colleagues garnishing a serious expression and sa...

The Mystery of Spontaneous Human Combustion

Image
Just a Stock Image of Fire Spontaneous Human Combustion Spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is the process through which a living or recently deceased body goes through combustion at such a rapid pace that the body self ignites or explodes usually without any external source of ignition. As insane as it does sound, there have actually been a few reported cases of SHC happening in real life and leaving grim and burned sites with little to no explanation as to how or why it happened. This phenomenon has also been seen in pop culture and literature such as in the novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens and these depictions also share similar characteristics with actual reported cases. The first known use of the phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion dates all the way back to the 17th century but it was really due to the novel “Bleak House” wherein one of the characters is killed off by SHC that it gained popularity. After this, there were a large number of cases recorded in the...

The Mummified Bog People

Image
Image of the Tollund Man, the most well-preserved bog body What is a Bog Body? This mystery is more of a creepy one and involves human corpses and mummies. A bog body is a human corpse that has been mummified in a peat bog through natural and environmental elements present in the bog. It is caused by the unique physical and biochemical composition of the bogs. While it's difficult to exactly say how many bog bodies there are, the number is surely in the hundreds. These bodies, sometimes known as bog people, have been found all over the world as well as dating back to different periods, for example, some have been dated to around 8000 BCE while some near the Second World War. While there is such a level of differentiation between these bog bodies, the unifying factor among them is that they have all been found in peat bogs and preserved to a decent extent. Due to the effect of peat, these bog bodies are preserved in a very unique and different way, they often maintain their...

The Mary Celeste was a two-masted sailing vessel that was built in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1861 and served under the name Amazon for 6 years. The Unsolved Tunguska Event

Image
Stock Image of a Burning Forest The Tunguska Event This strange phenomenon, known as "The Tunguska Event," is one of the greatest mysteries of all time if judged on the scale of the event. The Tunguska Event was a large explosion that occurred near the Krasnoyarsk Krai in Russia which was at the time, a part of Siberia known as Podkamennaya Tunguska River. The explosion took place in the early hours of 30th June 1908 and reports suggest that the initial sight was a fireball that would have been 50-10 0m wide. It depleted 2,000 sq km of the Taiga forest in the area, flattening a whopping 80 million trees. The shock wave from the explosion has been estimated to have been about a 5.0 on the Richter scale w hich would have been capable of destroying a large metropolitan area. This event has been classified by most scientists to have been an asteroid impact and also the largest "impact event" (collision between 2 astronomical objects causing an impact) in recorde...

Many of you must've heard of some or the other conspiracy theory about aliens and government involvement in their existence such as "Area 51" and today I'll be talking about another one of the most popular ones related to this. Majestic 12 (a.k.a "M-12) is claimed to be a government organization formed in 1974 headed by 12 men with the sole purpose of facilitating UFO and extraterrestrial investigations while maintaining an absolute level of secrecy in their existence. This organization was supposedly created by U.S. President Harry Truman after an alien space an alien spacecraft that crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, in July 1947. Image
Stock Image of a Creepy Ship because there were no cameras in 1748 The Lady Lovibond & It's Wreck- The Lady Lovibond was a three-masted schooner that was wrecked, on the Goodwin Sands, off the Kent coast of south-east England on February 13, 1748. This particular date was also a Friday the 13th which is considered a very unlucky and ominous day. The legend surrounding it and the reason its called a ghost ship is that people have seen it many years after its wreckage. Sightings and reports all claim that every 50 years after the wreckage, the lady Lovibond was seen by some ships and usually with an eerie white glow The story of the wreckage is that on 13 February 1748 the ship, which was captained by Simon Reed (In some reports named Simon Peel), who had just been married to a lady named Annetta and the cruise was a form of celebration for them. The Philosopher's Stone & Magnum Opus

Image
What is The Philosopher's Stone? Many of you may have already heard about this legendary substance from places like Harry Potter or Full Metal Alchemist which is where I personally first heard of it. Amazingly, this alchemic legend isn't just for shows and fiction but is also a real legend and many people believe that it does or at one point, may have existed. To start off, What is alchemy? Well, Alchemy is basically the predecessor to modern chemistry. It deals with transmutation, which means changing of matter from one form to another the major goals or focuses of alchemy were attempting to transmute common metals into gold as well as many spiritual aspects such as attaining immortality and spiritual knowledge. Now, The Philosopher's Stone is a substance of some sort, usually said to be a red or white stone that is claimed to be capable of increasing the possibilities of alchemy to limitless proportions. The stone is claimed to be able to help an alchemist turn o...

Ningen, The Japanese Whale Creature

What is a Ningen? The Ningen is a legend/cryptid from Japanese folklore about a strange aquatic humanoid monster. The word 'Ningen' directly translates to 'human' in Japanese and this makes it quite a suitable name as the monster is said to possess a face and limbs quite similar to those of us humans. They are said to be quite large with reports claiming their length to be approximately 20-30 metres and state that they have a very pale skin tone. The skin itself is said to be very soft and blubbery much like that of a beluga whale. The creatures also seem to be nocturnal and have shown to be most active at night when they come to the surface, possibly for feeding or breathing. Reports of what they look like are quite varying but all of them have reported the creature having a human-like face. Sightings/Evidence- Reports of the Ningen can be found from as far back as the 1990s but the stories and sightings mix up with some from more recent times so the exact date ...

The Lost Ship, The SS Ourang Medan

Image
What is the SS Ourang Medan? This theory/legend is not as popular as the others I've covered so far but is very mysterious and ranks high on my list of favourites. The SS Ourang Medan was a Dutch ship that was passing through the Strait of Malacca sometime between June of 1940 and 1948. It suddenly ran into mysterious problems and sent a horrifying distress call to nearby ships. The distress call was as follows, “All officers including captain dead, lying in chartroom and on bridge, probably whole crew dead,” after which there were some lines of unintelligible morse code followed finally by “I die.” This distress call was heard by an American ship, "The Silver Star" which tracked the location of the Medan with the help of British and Dutch listening posts. When they reached the Medan, they found that its engines were off and when communication was attempted, the Medan gave no reply. The crew of The Silver Star then proceeded to board the Medan only to be greeted by...
