Octavius, The Iced Ghost Ship

Image
Stock Image of a similar-looking Ship The Octavius and it's Mystery This is the tale of a mysterious ghost ship and arguably also one of the most famous. The story begins in 1761 when a three-masted schooner (a ship), Octavius departed from London for China. This trip was quite uneventful and went along smoothly with the Octavius successfully arriving in China in 1762. They unloaded their cargo and were heading back to the UK when the captain noticed that the weather was unusually warm. Due to this, the captain gambled on a return through the treacherous and then little known, Northwest Passage. The ship left but never ended up reaching the UK and it was assumed that they had fallen prey to the treacherous and icy Northwest Passage. The story of the Octavius continues again on October 11, 1775, when it was seen again. A whaling ship called the Herald was working along the west coast of Greenland when they spotted the Octavius floating in the water. They tried contacti...

The Unknown Van Meter Visitor

Image
Sketch of the Van Meter Visitor The Van Meter Visitor This tale is from many years ago about an interesting bat-like cryptid monster and has become one passed on for many generations. The Van Meter Visitor/Monster was observed in the Fall of 1903 in Van Meter, Iowa. The most popular description of it would be that it is a large bat humanoid creature with a horned head and that it reeked of a very foul stench for great distances around it. The creature was said to jump from building to building while flying at alarmingly fast speeds and some reports claim that it had the ability to shoot a bright light from its head. Over the course of a few nights, this monster was spotted in the town and reigned terror and fear among the resident. Although it was scary, some believed that it held no ill intent and thus it got the name Visitor instead of monster Now, this is the record of events that took place on those series of nights in 1903. On the first night, the creature was spo...

The Ghostly Handprint of Francis Leavy

Image
Stock Image, not actually Francis Leavy's Hand Francis Leavy & The Tragic Fire Ghostly handprints are something that is quite regularly referred to when talking about paranormal mysteries and ghosts overall. This specific mystery is of that sort but adds on an interesting and confusing twist to that. It is about a firefighter who was able to predict his own death as well as leave a handprint that was never removed for many years after his death. The mystery starts off on April 18th, 1924 when Francis Leavy, a firefighter ranked 'pipeman' from Chicago, Illinois was in his department going through quite a normal day. As the day progressed his colleagues started to notice that he was behaving strangely and seemed to be depressed but it wasn't very alarming at the time. That changed when Francis went to clean a window and while doing so stopped while leaning his hand against it. He suddenly turned to his colleagues garnishing a serious expression and sa...

The Mystery of Spontaneous Human Combustion

Image
Just a Stock Image of Fire Spontaneous Human Combustion Spontaneous human combustion (SHC) is the process through which a living or recently deceased body goes through combustion at such a rapid pace that the body self ignites or explodes usually without any external source of ignition. As insane as it does sound, there have actually been a few reported cases of SHC happening in real life and leaving grim and burned sites with little to no explanation as to how or why it happened. This phenomenon has also been seen in pop culture and literature such as in the novel Bleak House by Charles Dickens and these depictions also share similar characteristics with actual reported cases. The first known use of the phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion dates all the way back to the 17th century but it was really due to the novel “Bleak House” wherein one of the characters is killed off by SHC that it gained popularity. After this, there were a large number of cases recorded in the...

The Mummified Bog People

Image
Image of the Tollund Man, the most well-preserved bog body What is a Bog Body? This mystery is more of a creepy one and involves human corpses and mummies. A bog body is a human corpse that has been mummified in a peat bog through natural and environmental elements present in the bog. It is caused by the unique physical and biochemical composition of the bogs. While it's difficult to exactly say how many bog bodies there are, the number is surely in the hundreds. These bodies, sometimes known as bog people, have been found all over the world as well as dating back to different periods, for example, some have been dated to around 8000 BCE while some near the Second World War. While there is such a level of differentiation between these bog bodies, the unifying factor among them is that they have all been found in peat bogs and preserved to a decent extent. Due to the effect of peat, these bog bodies are preserved in a very unique and different way, they often maintain their...

The Piri Reis Map

Image
The Piri Reis Map What is the Piri Reis Map? The Piri Reis Map is a map of the whole world that was created in the year 1513 and encompasses a great mystery within it.  The map is drawn on a gazelle skin parchment and is roughly 35 by 24 inches in size.  It is one of the most interesting and important maps from its time due to the extent of the world shown and its use and display of things beyond its time. While the map is in decent condition, sadly, what we have today seems to only be  approximately one-third of the original and nobody knows where the rest is. The map was found in Istanbul, Turkey by a theologian named Gustav Deissmann who was in the process of cataloging the contents of Istanbul’s Topaki Palace Library. During this, he and the palace director found many bundles of maps and charts hidden within unrelated documents. They went through all the documents and discovered a map that seemed important to them at first glance. After verification by an e...

Ro-Langs, The Zombies of Tibet

Image
Stock Photo of the Himalayas looking creepy and perfectly zombie-like. Zombies & The Ro-Langs Zombies are supposedly undead creatures born from the infection and/or reanimation of a human body. Zombies are very popular in movies and pop culture and have been portrayed in many different ways. The most popular thought of the creation of zombies is that they pass on a virus or pathogen through biting a healthy human being which makes them a zombie as well. Some other types are also said to be formed through magic or a curse of sorts. This process of their rapid multiplication continues making them very hard to stop. On the plus side, zombies seem to lose most of their cognitive abilities and become very close to mindless creatures who have just a single goal, to find other healthy humans and bite them. Today's mystery is about real-life zombies in the scary heights of the Himalayan mountains and Tibet. A Ro-langs is a sort of zombie-like being that originated from Tibetan...

The Unknown Mysteries of Pokaini Forest

Image
Stock Image of a kinda creepy forest. Pokaini Forest & its History Pokaini forest is a forest (obviously) located in Latvia, near a small town named Dobele. This forest has been shrouded in legends and mysteries for many years and is a place that many consider being a strong anomalous zone to the point where even NASA satellites discovered inexplicable radiating energy. An anomalous area is one in which strange and unexplainable occurrences, usually perceived to be paranormal occur often or even regularly. In the case of Pokaini Forest, there are a few reports of strange things happening as far back as the 1930s but nothing was really solid or documented up until the 1990s when the forest was investigated by a researcher which then lead to many more people going to the forest as well as discovering strange occurrences. The forest was allegedly first studied in 1996 by Ivar Viks who was a researcher from Riga. He was supposedly intrigued by the forest and the va...

The Lifeboat Mystery on Bouvet Island

Image
This is not Bouvet Island but just a cool island stock image. Bouvet Island & The Lifeboat Before the actual mystery, I'll start off by giving a summary of the Island. Bouvet Island is the most secluded and remote island in the world with nothing for more than a thousand kilometres around it. It is a volcanic island with no inhabitants and is one of the three dependent territories of Norway. The island has an area of 49 square kilometres and it is located in the Atlantic ocean. 93 percent of the island is covered by a large glacier and the centre is filled with ice and an inactive volcano. The closest landmass is Antarctica which is 1700 km away, while the closest inhabited location is Tristan da Cunha island which is a whopping 2,250 kilometres northwest of Bouvet Island. The island was discovered on 1 January 1739 by a set of French ships but at that time mapping wasn't what it is now and nobody set foot on the island until 1927 by a Norwegian expedition. Now to th...

The Mystery of The Lady Lovibond

Image
Stock Image of a Creepy Ship because there were no cameras in 1748 The Lady Lovibond & It's Wreck- The Lady Lovibond was a three-masted schooner that was wrecked, on the Goodwin Sands, off the Kent coast of south-east England on February 13, 1748. This particular date was also a Friday the 13th which is considered a very unlucky and ominous day. The legend surrounding it and the reason its called a ghost ship is that people have seen it many years after its wreckage. Sightings and reports all claim that every 50 years after the wreckage, the lady Lovibond was seen by some ships and usually with an eerie white glow The story of the wreckage is that on 13 February 1748 the ship, which was captained by Simon Reed (In some reports named Simon Peel), who had just been married to a lady named Annetta and the cruise was a form of celebration for them. At the time, Simon and Annetta who were accompanied by their first mate Rivers and about 50 or so wedding guests were travelli...

Ningen, The Japanese Whale Creature

What is a Ningen? The Ningen is a legend/cryptid from Japanese folklore about a strange aquatic humanoid monster. The word 'Ningen' directly translates to 'human' in Japanese and this makes it quite a suitable name as the monster is said to possess a face and limbs quite similar to those of us humans. They are said to be quite large with reports claiming their length to be approximately 20-30 metres and state that they have a very pale skin tone. The skin itself is said to be very soft and blubbery much like that of a beluga whale. The creatures also seem to be nocturnal and have shown to be most active at night when they come to the surface, possibly for feeding or breathing. Reports of what they look like are quite varying but all of them have reported the creature having a human-like face. Sightings/Evidence- Reports of the Ningen can be found from as far back as the 1990s but the stories and sightings mix up with some from more recent times so the exact date ...
