The story begins in 1761 when a three-masted schooner (a ship), Octavius departed from London for China. This trip was quite uneventful and went along smoothly with the Octavius successfully arriving in China in 1762. They unloaded their cargo and were heading back to the UK when the captain noticed that the weather was unusually warm. Due to this, the captain gambled on a return through the treacherous and then little known, Northwest Passage. The Piri Reis Map What is the Piri Reis Map? The Piri Reis Map is a map of the whole world that was created in the year 1513 and encompasses a great mystery within it.  The map is drawn on a gazelle skin parchment and is roughly 35 by 24 inches in size.  It is one of the most interesting and important maps from its time due to the extent of the world shown and its use and display of things beyond its time. While the map is in decent condition, sadly, what we have today seems to only be  approximately one-third of the original and nobody knows where the rest is. The map was found in Istanbul, Turkey by a theologian named Gustav Deissmann who was in the process of cataloging the contents of Istanbul’s Topaki Palace Library. Stock Photo of a Ship The Mary Celeste This tale of an abandoned ghost ship has been told and dramatized many times in books, documentaries, films, etc. and the name of the ship has become one known by enthusiasts as a famous and unnerving tale. Before the actual mystery, here is a summary of the actual ship and its history. The Mary Celeste was a two-masted sailing vessel that was built in Nova Scotia, Canada in 1861 and served under the name Amazon for 6 years. In 1868, the ship was transferred to American Ownership and was subsequently given its name, "The Mary Celeste." The ship remained in American ownership until 1885 when her captain deliberately wrecked her near the coast of Haiti in an attempt to claim the Insurance claim money and after that, the ship's story ends. Bouvet Island is the most secluded and remote island in the world with nothing for more than a thousand kilometres around it. It is a volcanic island with no inhabitants and is one of the three dependent territories of Norway. The island has an area of 49 square kilometres and it is located in the Atlantic ocean. 93 percent of the island is covered by a large glacier and the centre is filled with ice and an inactive volcano. The closest landmass is Antarctica which is 1700 km away, while the closest inhabited location is Tristan da Cunha island which is a whopping 2,250 kilometres northwest of Bouvet Island. Stock Image of a Creepy Ship because there were no cameras in 1748 The Lady Lovibond & It's Wreck- The Lady Lovibond was a three-masted schooner that was wrecked, on the Goodwin Sands, off the Kent coast of south-east England on February 13, 1748. This particular date was also a Friday the 13th which is considered a very unlucky and ominous day. The legend surrounding it and the reason its called a ghost ship is that people have seen it many years after its wreckage. What is a Ningen? The Ningen is a legend/cryptid from Japanese folklore about a strange aquatic humanoid monster. The word 'Ningen' directly translates to 'human' in Japanese and this makes it quite a suitable name as the monster is said to possess a face and limbs quite similar to those of us humans. They are said to be quite large with reports claiming their length to be approximately 20-30 metres and state that they have a very pale skin tone. The skin itself is said to be very soft and blubbery much like that of a beluga whale. The creatures also seem to be nocturnal and have shown to be most active at night when they come to the surface, possibly for feeding or breathing. Reports of what they look like are quite varying but all of them have reported the creature having a human-like face. What is the SS Ourang Medan? This theory/legend is not as popular as the others I've covered so far but is very mysterious and ranks high on my list of favourites. The SS Ourang Medan was a Dutch ship that was passing through the Strait of Malacca sometime between June of 1940 and 1948. It suddenly ran into mysterious problems and sent a horrifying distress call to nearby ships. The distress call was as follows, “All officers including captain dead, lying in chartroom and on bridge, probably whole crew dead,” after which there were some lines of unintelligible morse code followed finally by “I die.” This distress call was heard by an American ship, "The Silver Star" which tracked the location of the Medan with the help of British and Dutch listening posts. When they reached the Medan, they found that its engines were off and when communication was attempted, the Medan gave no reply. Today I'll be talking about an age-old urban legend, The Loch Ness Monster. This Legend is about a creature that lurks in the Loch Ness Lake in Scotland. It is said to have a huge, elongated neck sort of like a giraffe, and one or more humps on its back which are usually visible above the water. It is estimated to be about the size of an elephant and has only been seen by very few people which is why it is referred to as an urban legend. Over the years the monster has been started to be known by the shorter nickname, "Nessie" This legend dates back many years and there are multiple sightings over the past few decades.
